I had this theory as a result of 10 years of study of Cleopatra as a historical character. And I need to come to Egypt, to go to the field to see the remains of this temple to be sure that these remains have the possibility of being the Lost Tomb of Cleopatra. After three months of studying the area I realized that this was a perfect place for Cleopatra’s tomb.
Nobody ever came out with his idea. If there’s 1% of a chance that the last Queen of Egypt could be buried there, it’s my duty to search for her.
So, I had to present my project to the Permit Committee and I did so. And I left to Dominican Republic thinking that maybe this project will never have opportunity to start. But few months later the project was approved and they said to me that they would give me two months only to prove my theory. You know, in archaeology two months is nothing. But I took the two months that they gave me and almost in two months we were finishing, we found the first two chambers. So they extended the permission for next season.
We have very important results. We have found this very interesting complex of tunnels 25 and 35 meters down, which we are still cleaning. We have found this, the most recent discoveries, the cemetery outside the temple, which is the proof that in this area there is a royal tomb. I believe that this is Cleopatra’s tomb. But what we know for sure is that we are in the area where is for sure a royal tomb.
All the artefacts that we have found are Greek or Greco-Roman, so it encourage us to continue searching for Cleopatra. Also this is the first time that any archaeologist has found tunnels, passages underground inside the walls of the temple. So we have changed forever what they know about the architecture of the funerary temples.
We believe, in the next seasons we have six months, it could be for us…We can reach our target. I’m pretty sure since the beginning, for me it’s no doubt. Scientifically we know for sure there is a royal tomb. And I will continue until I prove that this is a perfect place for the tomb of Cleopatra and Mark Anthony.
