Christopher Gidlow: I think if you’re going to try and solve the mystery of Arthur, there are a few fundamental questions that you have to find answers to. One of which is to do with the time. When did these things happen; the next thing is going to be place, and finally what was he doing? He’s portrayed as a war leader – a person leading the kings of the Britons in wars against the Saxons. If we can find in the right times and the right places no evidence of warfare between the Britons and the Saxons, then the whole edifice of what kind of a person King Arthur was comes collapsing down.
Narrator: Now, a new investigation pulled together a crackteam of specialists from different fields: Arthurian experts, forensic archaeologists, military historians and CGI animators who are uncovering a trail of faint clues obscured by time. Fresh pieces in the puzzle of King Arthur. Evidence of brutal civil war, death and destruction. And the discovery of a intriguing and unique military base: the formidable fortress of a dark age warlord which survived as a ruin for over 700 years.
