Key Dates

The artefacts date from the medieval period, around the 12th-13th century.

These fine Albarelli containers were created by Islamic artists in Damascus, Syria in the medieval period, then later exported to Europe to be used as vessels for housing and transporting medical materials. They are currently on display at the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar, and reflect the wide-reaching influence of Islamic art.

Albarelli are commonly thought to be an Italian form, but they were in fact invented by Islamic artists. This pair was likely created as part of a much larger set, before later being removed to Europe, as after the 17th century Islamic cultures were finally overtaken by Europeans in the field of medical science, an area they had lead the world in for centuries.

Oliver Watson, Director of the Museum of Islamic Art, commented on the artefacts: "I find these pieces very interesting because they illustrate as it were the global reach of Islamic culture and influence."
