About Me
I was born and raised in England and educated at the University of Cambridge, but moved to the United States nearly 40 years ago. I am currently Professor Emeritus of Linguistics at the University of Hawaii, where I taught and did research for 25 years.  I am best known world-wide for my work on Creole languages (Dynamics of a Creole System, Roots of Language, Bastard Tongues) and the evolution of language (Language and Species, Language and Human Behavior, Adam's Tongue), but I have also published fiction and a biography.  Although my career has been in linguistics, my first degree was in history, and I have had a lifelong fascination with the history of the Roman Empire. I have carried out extensive research on the Desert Fathers of Egypt in preparation for writing historical novels about them; the first of these, The Desert and the City, was recently published.
