Temple of Aphrodite

Temple at Aphrodisias

Key Dates

The Temple of Aphrodite was built circa 100 BC.

Geyre
Turkey

The Temple of Aphrodite was built over an earlier shrine and contained an ceremonial statue dedicated to Aphrodite, the goddess of love.  Though only fragments of the original statue have been found, fourteen columns remain standing.

It is thought that the Temple was actually built on top of a pre-existing temple; mosaic fragments allude to an earlier shrine.  Aphrodite's notoriously salacious cult offered choice talisman, such as a gold crown and double axe, to the goddess.
