Pavlopetri
Greece

Pavlopetri is a city off the southern tip of Laconia, Greece. It became submerged under the sea in around 1000 BC. It is thought the city was first occupied around 2800 BC, almost 5,000 years ago.

Roads, streets, structures and a necropolis can still be seen today in Pavlopetri and the town's layout has remained intact although it is exposed to damage from modern boats, tourists and looters.

The city was re-discovered in 1967 and was then surveyed by a team of archaeologists from Cambridge the following year.

Archaeological work began at the site in 2009 and the site has been digitally mapped in 3D using sonar technology. The fieldwork will continue until 2013.
