Palazzo Massimo alle Terme
The museum is noted for its rare numismatic collection, which show the development of currency in Italy. Particularly notable coins on display are the four ducats of Paul II with the navicella of St Peter, Theodoric's medallion, and the silver piastre of the Pontifical State inscribed with views of Rome.
Alongside this are sculptures dating from as far back as the 2nd century BC. This include the Tivoli General and Via Labicana Augustus and shed some light on the evolution of the portrayal of emperors as the Roman Empire progressed. In one room, visitors can see the richly decorated sarcophagus and burial jewellery of the mummy that was found on the Via Cassia in 1964. The museum also houses an impressive array of frescos, stucci and mosaics dating back to the first century BC. All visitors must be accompanied by a museum guide.
