The Nîmes Arena

Arena de Nimes

Nîmes
France
Key Dates

Construction dates back to the end of the 1st century AD, when Nîmes was still part of the Roman Empire  under Emperor Augustus. Excavations suggest the arena was built between 90 and 120 AD.

In the 6th century, the Visisoths turned the arena into a fortress – complete with moat – and the building became a refuge for its community. In the 12th century, it became the home of the viscounty of Nîmes, and a chateau was built inside it. The King of France retained ownership until the 14th century, when private owners took charge.

From 1786, the houses, chateau and chapels in the complex were demolished, and restoration started. It was remodelled in 1863 to serve as a bullring. Today it is one of the city's leading tourist attractions.

Key People

The Roman Empire under the rule of Augustus oversaw contstruction.

The Nîmes Arena, which dates back to the 1st century AD, was modelled on Rome's Colosseum. It is oval-shaped, measuring 133m long, 101m wide and 21m high, and is an impressive spectacle for any visitor to the city.

Its façade has two levels of 60 arches, as well as an attic separated by a cornice. At the top, pre-drilled stones were positioned to overhang so that long poles could be positioned over the arena. A huge canvas canopy was then attached to these poles, providing protection against the sun and bad weather.

The arena served first as a field for Roman games, before being tranformed into a fortress for military purposes and then evolving into a village – complete with houses, chapels and a chateau.

Maison Carrée is the only completely preserved Roman temple in the world. The Tour Magne, or Grande Tour, is the only tower left from the original town built by Augustus. It is on the Mont Cavalier, the town’s highest point. The top of the tower offers stunning views of Nîmes.
