Key People

Henri Cernuschi; economist and banker whose collection of Asian art formed the museum's basis.

The Musee Cernuschi, in Paris, is an Asian art museum housing over 12,400 pieces from the East. It is the second largest collection of Asian art in Paris, after the Guimet Museum, and the fifth biggest museum for Chinese art in Europe. It was founded in 1898 by the prominent French banker Henri Cernuschi, and underwent a huge overhaul in 2001 which took its total floor space to 3,200sq metres.

Around 900 exhibits are on permanent display at the museum, the bulk of which are Chinese bronzes from the 15th century BC to the 3rd century AD. The Han, Northern Wei, Sui (mainly bronzes), Tang, Song (mainly pottery) and Liao (guilded bronzes) dynasties are all very well catered for, notable relics of whom include The Tigress bronze wine vessel and the bronze Jian basin; the largest outside China. There is also a Japanese section, containing over 3,500 bronze, ceramic and painted exhibits.
