Key Dates

The museum was created in 1825.

The Iziko South African Museum is one of the country's largest, situated in Cape Town's Company Garden. It is home to over 1.5 million artifacts, ranging from fossils and Stone Age tools to historical clothing and meteorites. The museum is laid out on four levels, each of which contains wildly varying permanent and temporary exhibits. These include the Iziko Planetarium, Sharkworld, The Power of Rock Art and Karoo (250 million year-old indigenous mammal-like reptiles). Yet the museum's most renowned objects are the Lydenburg Heads, ca.500 AD; the oldest below-equator earthenware sculptures. Other artifacts include glass, ceramics, wooden tools, toys and silver, to name but a fraction of the vast whole.
