Deir el-Bahri (“The Northern Monastery”) is an ancient Egyptian complex of temples and tombs that can be found on the west bank of the Nile, opposite the city of Luxor, Egypt. Its finest feature is the Mortuary Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, which is one of the most beautiful temples in the world.
Hatshepsut’s temple is essentially a very large extension of Mentuhotep II's temple, so large it dwarfs the original structure. But the two are so well blended together you can hardly tell the difference.
While it is possible to visit and view the ruins, tourism in the area has dropped off significantly since the so called “Luxor Massacre” in 1997, when 58 tourists and 4 Egyptians were murdered at the temple by Islamic terrorists.
