The Castle first opened to the public as a museum in 1860.

Colchester castle in Colchester, Essex is an example of a largely complete largest Norman Castle. It is a massive stone keep and bailey fortress, however only two storeys now survive of this.  Colchester was the first capital of Roman Britain and beneath the Castle are the remains of the most famous Roman buildings, built on the foundations of the Roman Temple of Claudius.
