The museum houses dating from prehistory right through to the present day. The current building dates from 1885.

The museum houses a range of art and artefacts from all periods in human history. The historic collections are of particular relevance, comprising, as they do, artefacts and reconstructions of living arrangements dating from as far back as 400,000 years ago. Particular hightlights include an Egyptian mummy from the third century BC, the famous Sultanganj Buddha, which stands 2.3m high and has been displayed in Birmingham since 1867, and a 9,000-year-old human skull which was found in Jericho.
