Key People

Karl Friedrich Schinkel, the famous architect who designed the museum.

The Altes Museum is one of Berlin's most iconic buildings. Its neoclassical building houses the Antikensammlung (antique collection) of the Berlin State Museums, and is one of seven world famous museums on Berlin's Museum Island. It was originally called the Royal Museum, and built to Karl Friedrich Schinkel's Greek-inspired design in 1830. It worked under that title until 1845, when it became known by its current name. It was heavily bombed during the Second World War however, and it was only in 1966 that a huge restoration project saw the museum taken back to something resembling its former glory. The museum houses a vast array of artefacts but is probably best known for its large collection of Greek artworks on the ground floor; the city's Egyptian Museum housing its exhibits on the upper floor until its moving back this year (2009).
