Known commonly as Trajan, Marcus Ulpius Nerva Traianus was born in 52AD and died of a stroke in 117AD.
He reigned as Roman Emperor from 98AD until his death.
He was best known for reshaping the city of Rome and left many landmarks such as Trajan's Forum, Trajan's Market and Trajan's Column.
He was also well known as a military commander, triumphing in many battles and expanding the Roman Empire to its greatest extent.
Trajan's reputation endured throughout history. Every new emperor after him was honoured by the Senate with the prayer "felicior Augusto, melior Traiano", meaning "may he be luckier than Augustus and better than Trajan".
