Key People:

This relief comes from the Arch of Portugal, in the second century AD. It represents the apotheosis of Sabina, wife of emperor Hadrian, who was deified after her death. Hadrian sits on an upright chair and watches as Sabina is carried up from her funeral pyre on the back of a winged figure, thought to represent Eternity. The male figure sitting at Hadrian's feet is a personification of the Field of Mars.
