Stonehenge: The Biography of a Landscape

There have been innumerable books about Stonehenge, but this was the first to look at the World Heritage Site not only in its wider setting but also through time, from 10,000 BC to the present day. It includes the bitter disputes about a possible new road network and visitor centre. Darvill claims to have solved the riddle of why the bluestones were brought all the way from the Preseli Hills. He also argues that Stonehegne was designed as a place of pilgrimage for those seeking healing.
Timothy Darvill is Professor of Archaeology in the School of Conservation Sciences, University of Bournemouth, who has been intimately involved with the development proposals for Stonehenge for 15 years. In 2002 he coordinated the production of a Research Framework for the Stonehenge World Heritage Site on behalf of English Heritage. Darvill is the author of over a dozen books.
