The Spirit of Hadrian's Wall

The Spirit of Hadrian's Wall book by Roger Clegg

The Spirit of Hadrian's Wall
by Roger Clegg, Mark Richards

It would be no exaggeration to claim that  Roger Clegg knows Hadrian’s Wall better than anyone else. The Northumberland photographer devoted six years to capturing the wall and the countryside that surrounds it. The result is The Spirit of Hadrian’s Wall, almost 200 pages of beautifully taken and lovingly captioned images.

Clegg has captured contrasting moods and landscapes, blazing skies at dawn and dusk, mist lifting from the crags and new-fallen snow banked against the familiar stonework. Some landscapes are presented several times, at different hours of the day or in different seasons. The results are quite brilliant.

The images are accompanied by a considered 'Note on the Photography', which is a must-read for anyone wanting to shoot Britain's great Roman barrier.

Author Mark Richards provides an introduction and a sketch of the historical and social context of the wall. He also provides the words for each photographic chapter, which follows the wall from east to west. The Roman footprint is writ large, but there are also stories from the age of Arthur, the early Christian missionaries, and of great industrial milestones closer to the modern age.
