The Secrets of Stonehenge: A Time Team Special
by Tim Taylor
Undoubtedly the allure of Stonehenge is its mystery and near mythic-status. But whilst this is one of the most popular reasons for visiting the site, isn't it about time we have some answers to its origins that are as solid as its 40ton Sarson stones?
This Time Team special is the televised culmination of six years of dedicated work by a vast team of archaeologists, headed by Professor Mike Parker Pearson. Crucially digging not just Stonehenge itself, but the surrounding areas at Durrington Walls, new theories emerge which advocate a re-writing of the 'official' history of the area.
The show seeks to establish Stonehenge as a monument to the ancestors but not the focal point of the area itself. A cursus is said to separate the monument from Durrington henge in the north east, leading to two distinct areas in use at the time: one for the living and one a startling tribute to the dead.
