Egypt at Highclere: The Discovery of Tutankhamun

Egypt at Highclere: The Discovery of Tutankhamun, written by Fiona Carnarvon, is the book accompanying the Egyptian Exhibition at Highclere Castle, the seat of the Earls of Carnarvon. It looks into the life of the 5th Earl of Carnarvon and his incredible discovery of the tomb of King Tutankhamun alongside Howard Carter in 1922.
"Presently my eyes drew accustomed to the light, details of the room within emerged slowly from the mist, strange animals, statues, gold...everywhere the glint of gold...for the moment an eternity...I was struck dumb with amazement and, when Lord Carnarvon...enquired anxiously, 'Can you see anything?' It was all I could do to get out the words, 'Yes, wonderful things.'"
The book conveys this epic drama through original photography, many of which were made by Carnarvon, an early pioneer of camerawork, and archives from Highclere itself. Over 5,000 treasures were retrieved from the tomb. This book provides a beginners' insight into mummification, and brief explanations of Ancient Egypt's religious beliefs, art and culture. The book is the second written outing for Fiona, the 8th Countess of Carnarvon, after Carnarvon & Carter, her account of the relationship that led to the famous discovery.
