Horsemen from the west frieze of the Parthenon

 Horsemen of the north frieze

Key Dates
438
BC

The Parthenon was constructed between 438 and 432 BC. This part of the frieze, along with many other fragments and sculptures, was removed from the site in the early 19th century.

Key People

Lord Elgin brought the marbles to the British Museum.

Reigning back so as not to ride off the edge of the frieze, the leading horseman turns to his companion and appears to make some sort of signal. Impressive for the sense of motion and energy they convey, these figures help give a sense of the scale and grandeur of the most imposing building in the Athenian Acropolis.
