Ethel Davies

Raised in California but transported 30 years ago to the UK, Ethel Davies works as a freelance writer and photographer. She spends her time travelling and documenting her experiences in words and pictures, and her work appears in the media in many guises. She has written books on Marrakech and Reykjavik for Thomas Cook and North Africa: The Roman Coast for Bradt. Speaking the standard collection of European tongues as well as fluent hand, she has managed to use these languages to journey to many countries around the world.
Since childhood, Ethel has been fascinated with early Greece and Rome. In her student years – including time in England – she was able to start viewing actual sites, and her interest in old stones began. Early professional practice had her researching ancient civilisations for children's books and subsequent work allowed her to photograph their remains. By seeing scattered artefacts in museums around the world, backed up by reading relevant works, her passion for the period grew. In pursuing the wider influence of these cultural giants, Ethel travelled to regions beyond Greece and Italy. It was during one of these trips that she discovered the incredible ancient heritage left in North Africa. Her repeated visits to the southern side of the Mediterranean Sea have given her an appreciation of both the past and the present of the region.
