Key People:

These two Anubis Fetishes were found in the northwest and southeast corners of King Tut's burial chamber. King Tutankhamun was an Egyptian pharaoh of the 18th dynasty who ruled from the age of nine until his death from 1333 - 1324 BC. In ancient Egypt these Fetishes were given the name, 'imy ut', meaning 'he who is in the bandages'. They are magical objects which were put in the tomb to protect it as they are emblems of Anubis the god who oversaw the process of mummification and burial. The Fetishes take the form of a headless animal, with its tail wrapped around a pole which is placed in a calcite base. The tails end in a papyrus flower and the poles are topped with a carved lotus buds.
