Dr Ray Howell

Dr Raymond Howell is a Welsh reader of History and Historical Archaeology at the University of Wales, Newport, and the Director of the South Wales Centre for Historical and Interdisciplinary Research (SWCHIR). He specialises in research areas including social development of later Roman and sub Roman Britain, Iron Age settlement patterns in southeast Wales and aspects of tribal continuity in Wales. He has authored several books, articles and papers, including Searching For the Silures: An Iron Age Tribe in South-East Wales, which was first published in 2006 and is set to be reprinted in 2010.
Howell gained his BA, MA and PhD at the University of London (Kings College). Additionally to being the director of research at SWCHIR and a doctoral supervisor, he is also a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London (FSA), President of the South Wales Record Society and the Chairman of the Glamorgan Gwent Archaeological Trust. He is currently engaged in further studies on the subject of the Silures, in particular their geographical dispersal in South Wales, the positioning of their hillforts and the correlation of their settlements with earlier and later inhabitants of the region.
Howell appeared in the short film Reclaiming King Arthur, made by the University of Wales Centre of Institute of Digital Learning, which examines the historical and mythical origins of King Arthur in the Gwent area. He is currently assisting in the creation of Second Life virtual renderings of historical sites in Wales.
