Dr Maarten Raven is the Field Director for the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden, and curator at Leiden University. He has been working on the university's excavations at the ancient necropolis of Saqqara since 1975; assuming his current curatorship in 1978. Dr Raven first recorded pottery at the site, but has since become entwined in the world of Egyptian epigraphy and architectural design. He has had the title of Field Director at the esteemed site since 1999, and has kept the Egyptological world updated with various papers and lectures on his team's discoveries. Dr Raven has also introduced the much-respected book Atlas of Egyptian Art, by E. Prisse D'Avennes.
