Director of Research at the French National Centre of Scientific Research

Dr Alain Zivie is the Director of Research at the French National Centre of Scientific Research, a post he has held since 1988. He works regularly at Saqqara, as the Director-Founder of the French Archaeological Mission of the Bubasteion. He is responsible for a number of major archaeological discoveries at Saqqara.

Zivie's most prized find came in 1987, when he located the tomb of the 18th Dynasty royal vizier Aper-el. Accessed through the Abwab el-Qotat (Doors of the Cats), where hundreds of mummified cats had been interred in earlier tombs, it contained many fine archaeological treasures, most of which are now on display at the Imhotep Museum at Saqqara. He is also responsible for the discovery of the tomb of Bubasteion I.16, carved and built for a high official of pharaoh Ramesses II, Pirikhnawa.
