Stonehenge Summer Solstice 2010

Stonehenge Summer Solstice 2009 - Panorama Insided the Stones

Each year on the 21th of June visitors from around the world gather at Stonehenge overnight to mark the summer solstice and to see the sunrise above the stones. At dawn the central Altar stone aligns with the Slaughter stone, Heel stone and the rising sun to the north-east. The Summer Solstice at Stonehenge is certainly the 'ancient history' summer event in Britain to attend.

This year again, English Heritage is expected to provide "Managed Open Access" (free overnight access to the inner circle of stones) to Stonehenge for the Summer Solstice, of which the most important moment is the sunrise at 4:45am on Monday the 21st of June. Access to the stones is expected to open around 8.30pm on Sunday the 20th of June, until 8am on Monday the 21st of June. Don't expect a huge Solstice rave, as no amplified music is allowed.

Stonehenge and the Druids: Stonehenge, Bluestonehenge and River Avon

Frank Somers, a Stonehenge Druid, gives a tour of Stonehenge and Bluestonehenge. Click the image to skip to the video."There's a passing on of knowledge for over 1,500 years spanning the whole Bronze Age, between our Stone Age ancestors who built Stonehenge and our Druid ancestors who wrote down folklore that we now take from Ireland, Scotland and Wales," says Stonehenge Druid Frank Somers. "And that means that folklore has earlier origins going right back."

Druid Frank Somers on the Landscape of Stonehenge

Frank Somers, a Stonehenge Druid, gives a tour of the Salisbury Plain, talking about Stonehenge and the surrounding areas, and their significance. Frank also talks about the recent discovery of Bluestonehenge, its particular importance to druids and how it lay untouched for over 5,000 years. The druids, who focus on being at one with nature and the ancestors, see Stonehenge as a place of great importance to their beliefs, as it is there that they feel the ancestors are speaking to them.

Equinox Shines a Light on Loughcrew

Forget Stonehenge - the Autumn/Winter megalithic collection is in, and it's green. Loughcrew, in County Meath, Ireland, is one of the country's most important heritage sites, and twice yearly crowds flock from far afield to see its most famous feature, when the equinox sun shines directly on the Cairn T chamber's beautiful backstone.

While there weren't 36,500 people in attendance, or the grandiose policing policies that go with Stonehenge on the solstices, visitors to the megalithic complex on Sunday morning were treated to an intimate and touching experience.

As these photos and video from Newgrange.com show, those who donned their fleeces at dawn were treated to a wonderful sunrise.

Despite my fears I might not make it to Stonehenge in time for the Solstice, I did it! Being one of the 36,500 people accessing the Stones on the night from Saturday to Sunday was surely an experience I won't easily forget, and near to utterly amazing ******* awesome.

Police Force Will Attend Stonehenge Summer Solstice Too

The Wiltshire police has announced there will be a large police presence at Stonehenge for this year's Summer Solstice. Because the celebrations fall over the weekend and fine weather is predicted, bigger crowds than usual are expected and Wiltshire police have said they will clamp down heavily on antisocial behaviour. The police operation will involve an unmanned drone and horses. Also drugs sniffer dogs will be launched at Stonehenge tomorrow as huge crowds descend on the ancient site for the summer solstice.

Stonehenge and the Solstices

Druids have long held Stonehenge high as a supernatural site, where the sun, moon and earth are brought together in harmony. And the way that the megalithic monument aligns with the summer and winter solstices certainly seems to suggest some sort of deliberate sun-centric design plan. But is Stonehenge really a centre for spiritual mysticism, or just an accident of prehistoric engineering?

Doing Summer Solstice Stonehenge Style

Solstice

Thanks to being fenced off by English Heritage to much druidic chagrin, Stonehenge is now largely the preserve of sedate tourist visits. Yet four times a year - during both equinoxes and solstices - the great stones are opened to the public in order to celebrate the ties between Britain's most famous prehistoric monument and the heavens.
