Modelling Ancient Man in 3D - Viktor Deak's Digital Mastery

Viktor Deak is a paleoartist hell-bent on perfection. So obsessed with man's prehistoric past is Deak, a stocky Hungarian-American, that he and his wife were married in the Gorilla Ghetto at New York's Bronx Zoo. He still spends much of his spare time staring at our nearest cousins in zoos, studying their reactions to the world with uncommon allure. But Deak's work straddles the ancient and the bleeding edge of digital art. He may still construct Neanderthals, Homo ergasters and Homo habilises from skulls using clay, but today his work is more likely to be seen on a screen than a sculpture gallery.

Beneath the Pyramids: Exploring Egypt's Underground for the First Time

Beneath the Pyramids - Exploring Egypt's Underground for the First TimeBRITISH WRITER DISCOVERS THE PHARAOHS’ LOST UNDERGROUND
Wednesday, 16 September 2009

A British writer has staked claim to finally finding the lost underground of the Pharaohs which has been rumoured to exist since the construction of the Great Pyramid nearly 5,000 years ago, creating a stir that is set to rock the Egyptological world.

Armed only with the forgotten memoirs of a nineteenth century British engineer, history and science writer Andre Coolings, tracked down the entrance to this forgotten tunnel system and was the first to explore it in modern times.

Is it possible that Coolings has beaten the Egyptologists at their own game by finding the entrance to Giza’s lost underground?

RoboScarab - The Next Generation of Robot Pyramid Explorers

RoboScarab LogoThere are currently two* 'explorer robots' active in Egypt: the Japanese robot researching the Osiris Shaft - it got as far as it could though, and a 'snake robot' might be needed to explore further - and the Leeds robot taking a more thorough look at the shafts in the the Great Pyramid of Cheops. Although the 'Leeds robot' just began the actual investigation of the secret doors last week, Dr. Hawass revealed at his lecture that on the 31th of July the Leeds team already had a major breakthrough. But that was all information Dr. Zahi was willing to share (except that they'll be taking a look at the other shafts also). No hint at what kind of 'major breakthrough' this could be, nor did he share any photographs, video or even just 3D sketches of the robot.

Xtreme Stonehenge Theories for the Slightly Insane

Planet Stonehenge at DawnDesperate to figure out before the Summer Solstice 2009 what Stonehenge is all about, but you can't decide which theory - sacrifices, calendar, discotheque, burial site, religious temple, neolithic art - to go with? Don't panic! Worth1000.com's finest Photoshop artists present us with a few alternative - but very plausible - theories about the iconic stone circle's construction, use, location and present state. Which of the options below do you deem to be most likely? Take the poll, let us know!

How To Construct Your Very Own Pyramidiot Theory and Put it to the Test

When reading books, and especially when browsing 'the interwebz', one comes across the most hilarious, flabbergasting and 'OMG, the pills you are taking, are those legal?!' pyramid theories. Sadly enough, the thrill is soon gone, as all those 'pyramidiot'1 stories fall back on the same basic protagonists – aliens and the inhabitants of Atlantis – and the same story lines – 'way older', special vibrations, immortality with an occasional twist – freemasonry, numerology and Supreme Council of Egyptian Antiquities conspiracy theories.

Composing a Pyramidiot Theory

Hence the challenge, write up your very best Pyramidiot Theory without using any of the stereotypes mentioned below. As any good scientist, you will support your theory with references and graphic materials2.

Pyramidiot clichées to avoid: atlantis & atlanteans, aliens, UFO's, mammoths, energy & energy lines, immortality, the Birth of Christ, interstellar communication, numerology. (Did I forget any?)

Putting your Theory to the Test

Next step of course, is to put your theory to the test.  My letter to the honorable Dr Hawass would read something like this:

Ancient Hockey Shrine discovered at Terracotta Warriors Site

Ancient Hockey Shrine by Doc MinorThe game of Hockey has been around from the time of early civilization. Some of the reports find the earliest origin of the game 4000 years back. Field hockey was reportedly played even before the birth of Christ. Basically known as the “ball and stick” game, it was played since ancient times in places diverse as Rome, Scotland, Egypt and South America. The game was referred to in different names but the basic idea of playing the game was the same. The most apt used term was “Hockie” by the Irish. Though the term was coined centuries ago, the word found its way through to the present generation.
