Located in Italy's Basilicata region, the villa of San Gilio likely served as a residence to some of the most powerful families in ancient Italy. The villa is dated to the 1st century BC, and its remains encompass two large bath complexes, a fountain and a cistern. Possible owners may have included the Veidii, Iunii and Valerii families.
Attempts are being made to preserve the site. But looters and modern agricultural works have already caused damage to the ancient villa.
