Top Ten Artefacts at the Neues Museum in Berlin

The Neues Museum re-establishes itself as one of the premier ancient world destination in Europe--and the world really-- after being closed since 1939. The collection combined with the restored/re-imagined building delivers an experience that every real ancient world explorer needs to embrace.

Neues Museum - Main Entrance Stairs

You need to get straight to the Main Stairs to start your exploration of the Neues. Feel the vibrations of history from the not so old Soviet bullet holes that still pepper the structural walls nearest the windows to the romanesque columns and classical castings from the Parthenon. Use the modern stairs to transport yourself across time and history at the Neues.

Prehistoric Paintings in the Gilf Kebir

Gilf Kebir is the most arid and desolate places on Earth, but thousands of years ago, the site had water and was inhabited by humans and animals. In the 1930s, Hungarian explorer László Almásy discovered prehistoric paintings in the Cave of the Swimmers, which gave a view into the life of a long forgotten civilisation. The video takes us inside the Foggini-Mestekawi cave, discovered in January 2003, and gives us an insight into its ancient, mysterious past.

Google Map: Key Sites in France's Roman Triangle

Map to show towns with Roman sites in South-Eastern FranceA recent article here on Heritage Key by Bija Knowles looked at Roman sites across the South East of France. There are many sites across the area which remain today as relics to the Roman past, the empire having controlled the area as early as 125BC.

The map shows the triangle area between the towns of Nimes, Arles and Orange where many of the heritage sites reside, but also includes Lyon which also has many notable Roman settlement relics.

Using this interactive map, you can see the exact locations of these sites, and easily plan your (real or fantasy) trip through Roman France.

Daily Flickr Finds: johnmartine63's Scene from The Egyptian "Book of the Dead"

Scene from The Egyptian Book of the DeadThe "Book of the Dead" isn't as daunting as some horror cinema flick may make it sound to be. In fact, it was a series of spells, pleas and stories which were written and compiled as a guide for the deceased to navigate across the underworld to reach paradise.

johnmartine63's image shows a scene depicted by figures in the Chicago Field Museum's exhibition, showing a crucial chapter of the Book of the Dead - Judgement. In the scene, the heart of the deceased is weighed against the Feather of Truth (an ostrich plume, representing the proper order of the universe known as ma'at), as they plead their case of having lived a life aligned with the ethical values held in Ancient Egypt.
