Brian Fagan studied archaeology and anthropology at Pembroke College, Cambridge. He spent his early career in Africa, where he excavated a wide variety of sites and became one of the pioneers of multidisciplinary African history. Since moving to the United States in 1966, he has become an archaeological generalist, who specialises in communicating archaeology to the widest possible audiences.
Brian Fagan is the prize-winning author of several bestselling college textbooks on archaeology, among them In the Beginning and People of the Earth, a prehistory of humankind. His more general books include The Adventure of Archaeology, Egypt of the Pharaohs, and The Rape of the Nile. In recent years, he has written four books about ancient climate change and human societies, among them The Little Ice Age, The Long Summer, and The Great Warming. He is currently working on a book on ancient humanity and water.
A much acclaimed lecturer, Brian Fagan travels widely talking to audiences from all walks of life about the past. He is also an experienced cruising sailor, who has cruised his own boats in many parts of the world.
