Using Third Party Viewers to Log into Heritage Key Virtual

If you're a seasoned Opensim user, you may already have a preferred viewer with which you can access grids like Heritage Key Virtual. With several viewers, it's possible to access Heritage Key Virtual with a few simple tweaks! In this blogpost, I'll outline how you can access Heritage Key Virtual through some popular third party viewers. Don't forget that you can also access Heritage Key Virtual though our own Viewer which you can download free.

Firstly, you'll need to register your account on Heritage Key. As part of the registration process, you'll be asked to choose an avatar name and password - you will use these to log into Heritage Key Virtual.

Accessing Heritage Key via the Second Life Viewer

Windows Users

Find the Second Life icon on your desktop.

  • Right-click the icon and select Properties.
  • In the Shortcut tab of the Properties window, find the 'Target' field.
  • In this field there will already be some text - do NOT delete this.
  • Add onto the end of the text the following:
  • -loginuri login.heritage-key.com
  • (Be sure to copy the above line exactly, including all the characters)
  • Click OK.

You should now be able to log into the Heritage Key grid using your Avatar name and Password.

Mac Users

To access Heritage Key Virtual using Second Life Viewer for Mac, click here to download the Alpha Grid Launcher program. Unzip this file if necessary and drag the program from the folder to your Applications folder.

Once you have done this, if you were previously using the Heritage Key viewer, you should delete it from your Applications folder, as it is no longer needed. Either select the application and press Cmd+Delete, or drag its icon to the Trash.

You should then be able to go directly to Heritage Key Virtual from the Heritage Key website. First, the Alpha Grid Launcher program will launch, and then, the Second Life program.

Linux Users

If you are using a GNOME desktop (for instance, most installations of Ubuntu) you can then click here to download the Linux grid launcher. Follow the instructions to install it found in the README.txt file. This will allow you to click the same links on the Heritage Key website to visit  regions as with the Heritage Key client.

If you are using another desktop, or if you simply prefer, you can also run the client from the command line. Open a terminal window, change to the directory where you installed the client software and run the following:

./secondlife -loginuri login.heritage-key.com

You will need to enter your avatar name, and the password you use for your account on the Heritage Key website, to continue.
