Colossal Head from Statue of King Tut's Granddad Found at Amenhotep III Funerary Temple Site

Head of gigantic Amenhotep III statue discovered at LuxorA multi-national team of Egyptian and European archaeologists excavating at the site of Amenhotep III’s enormous funerary temple in the Kom El-Hettan area of Luxor’s West Bank have uncovered the 3,000-year-old head of a massive statue of the 18th Dynasty pharaoh, the king of Egyptian kings, whom DNA testing has recently proven was Tutankhamun’s grandfather.

The find – made by the Colossi of Memnon and Amenhotep III Temple Conservation Project – was announced on Monday by Egyptian Culture Minister Farouk Hosni. Measuring 2.5 metres, made from solid red granite and depicting Amenhotep III wearing the Upper Egyptian white crown, it has been described by Secretary General of the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities Zahi Hawass as a “masterpiece of highly artistic quality”.

Old Big Head

The head, added Hawass, is a “portrait of the king with very fine youthful sculptured features”. It was sheared from the body statue at the chin and neck. The body statue – fragments of which are currently in restoration – is believed to show Amenhotep III in a standing position, with his hands crossed over his chest and holding the royal insignia.

“It is a masterpiece of highly artistic quality and shows a portrait of the king with very fine youthful sculptured features.”
Leader of the project at Amenhotep III’s funerary temple Dr. Hourig Sourouzian said that more of the statue may still lie in the rubble of the enormous ruined monument, one of the biggest man-made structures in ancient history. Measuring 700 metres long and 500 metres wide, and covering an area of 350,000 square metres – it was ten times larger than any other mortuary monument in Egypt.

Investigation and restoration of Amenhotep III’s funerary temple is expected to take upwards of 20 years (you can see Dr Sourouzian discussing the daunting task in this Heritage key video interview). 84 colossi statues have been unearthed there already, among them representations of King Amenhotep III and his wife, Queen Tiye.

Grandpa Amenhotep

Queen Tiye’s mummy was recently identified by Dr Hawass and a team of scientists as part of a painstaking medical and archaeological endeavor – the results of which were revealed last week in the Discovery Channel documentary King Tut Unwrapped – to map the family history of Tutankhamun. The project also determined that Amenhotep III – ninth pharaoh of the 18th dynasty, ruler of Egypt between 1390 BC and 1352 BC – was King Tut’s grandfather. The boy king is believed to have been born of an incestuous marriage between Akhenaten and his sister, both the offspring of Amenhotep III.

Amenhotep was the wealthiest and most powerful of all the pharaohs of ancient Egypt. In a list compiled by American business and financial bible Forbes in 2008, he was ranked as the 12th richest person in human history.

What was the racial designation of King Tut's Grandfather? Of Queen Tiy? of Tut? This type of wording is generally left out. Why? These great people of Kemetian (Egyptian) history were Africans (*). Despite the Hysos invasions of 1675 BC, the indiginous population and the dynastic leadership were Black people in the modern sense of the term. The Hyksos (foreign Asians) casused a disruption in parts of the leadership for about 75 years but were a very small population. The vast majority of the region was comprised of Black people. The 14th dynasty marked the ridding of the Hyksos from Africa by Queen Hatsepsut's Father using massive African Armies. Why is the "race factor" continuously handled in such a way that it is easy for one to assume that Ancient Egyptian Civilization was Caucasian or Asian?

The Ancient Egyptians were not part of the African race (i.e. black). They were, and are, members of the European, or "Caucasian" race, like other North Africans. There was a very brief period in Egyptian history when the Nubians, who were black, ruled Egypt, but this was way after the 18th Dynasty. On what do you base your assertion that the Ancient Egyptians were black?

BEFORE THE EUROPEAN LIVED IN A HOUSE OR WORE SHOE, THE AFRICAN CULTURE WAS ALREADY EXISTENCE. ITS SAD HOW,PEOPLE CONTINTUE TO WANT TO PUT NORTH AFRICA OUT,THE CONTINENT. WHEN TO THIS DATE THE OLDEST FOUND BODY WAS THAT OF A WOMAN IN INTER AFRICA BETTER KNOWN TO MANY AS LUCY DEGYPT IS SAID TO BE ETHIOPIAS OLDEST DAUGHTER. THE LATER YEARS OF EGYPT BECAME MORE EUROPEAN AFTER INVASIONS, THE RECORDS TELL THE TRUE STORY. LEAVE IT TO THE PEOPLE WHO REALLY DO THE DIGS AND DNA

before the european lived in a house or wore a shoe the african civilation was well in existence, people have change these maps to suit there agenda.trying to separate northern african from the continent.let the d n a and finds speak for there self well before the invasions in north africa. egypt is ethiopias oldest daughter

As a proud African American, nothing disturbs me more than seeing how mis-informed, illiterate and belligerent MY PEOPLE still are in America... even amidst the historic election of the first African American President of the United States of America. If the antropology of the region was studied, if the cultural and historical linguistics were considered and if we looked at Egyptian art (from their own varied perspective), we would see that the ancient Egyptians were a racially DIVERSE PEOPLE - consisting of everyone from Black Nubians to pale skinned Mediterraneans (and every shade and physical attribute in between)... And this being from the pre-dynastic throughout their 3000 + year history. Nothing has changed (as far as the physical/racial characteristics of the people) from then to now and not even conquests from people such as Nubians or the Greeks (i.e. Blacks/Whites) made any permanent impression upon the general population in Egypt. These examples were the ruling classes only and not indicative of what the average ancient Egyptian looked like. You can not have a country that literally borders Sudan, Libya and Israel and not have a huge variation of human phenotypes.
